Community Resilience Shines After Burglary at Southwark Food Bank
In early September, Southwark food bank, one of Bankuet’s key London partners since 2019, faced a devastating blow. Thieves broke in, stealing over £3,500 worth of food supplies and laptops essential to their operations. The impact on the food bank and the community it serves was immense, but what followed was a remarkable demonstration of empathy and action.
The news, widely covered by outlets like the BBC, even prompted swift support from the Prince and Princess of Wales. But it was the public’s overwhelming response through Bankuet’s digital platform that truly stood out. Within days, funds poured in from generous supporters who contributed with just a few clicks. To further aid Southwark’s recovery, Bankuet also donated £500 from its ‘General Pot’ of non-specific donations.
This collective effort underscores the power of digital-first fundraising in times of crisis. Southwark food bank, being digitally savvy and well-resourced, was able to mobilise its community quickly and effectively. The outcome serves as a poignant reminder: without digital understanding or capacity, other food banks might struggle to respond as efficiently to similar challenges.
